On that Date

Love Box

The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying:

  “I have loved you with an everlasting love;

      I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.    Jer 31:3 (NIV)

          Scrawled with a marker across the front of a soapbox in the laundry room was a date: 1-23-17.

            Some might wonder what that’s all about, but I know, because I know the one who wrote it. She scribbled the date there in order  to  recall  the opening of the box, and to gauge its lifespan and value. When the box becomes empty, she will know how long it had lasted and how well it served. That’s the way my wife does things. Light bulbs, soap boxes, corn  meal sacks, etc.

          As I stood there with a handful of dirty clothes destined for the laundry basket, I stopped and stared at that date and wondered; What else happened that day? And I couldn’t recall.

          Nobody’s birthday came to mind, no historical events or news worthy items. Who  knows?  But after a moment,  I knew.

                     I loved her on that day. I know nothing else about the 23rd of January, except that on that day I loved her. And on the 24th. And 25th. And every day since.

          I know that God has somewhere scratched the date that He started  my life with, and I just like to think that time to time He looks at it and thinks to himself; ‘On that day I loved Him.’
