What are you Thankful For?

thankful-for

John 10:10b, … I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

As we all gather around the poor old bird to give thanks this Thursday, first of all, remember the bird. He has nothing to be thankful for. He has been killed, plucked, stuffed, cooked, and in a few moments, will be the focus of a huge frontal attack. Sorry Tom.

But we have no pain in our future, except the hurt caused by the second piece of pumpkin pie. I guess all that food is something to be thankful for. Isn’t it?

We can and do and will stand around and number off the things we are thankful for, and, unlike our friend Tom, they are countless; Food, family, friends, jobs, homes, etc, etc, etc. The poorest among us is blessed way beyond anything we deserve.

But to be thankful for something, anything, it is required that the receiver of that blessing received it from another, to whom they are thankful. The White House turkey is thankful to the President for his pardon. The poor or privileged who was given a turkey by employer, or church, or charity is thankful to the giver. The givee. (I just made up a word; givee = one who gives).

May I tell you that there is One great Givee to whom I owe everything? He has given me life, and life to the fullest, and life eternal. There is nothing I have or do or am that He is not responsible for. He is the givee to whom I give all thanks.

Thank you Lord. Thank you for it all.
