God and Government

Gov n Polotics

I so very much want to write about the Lord and His resurrection and the promise of eternal life that it brings, but politics again sticks its ugly face before us. I prefer writing about God, but we don’t live in a bubble, so I will trend downward for just a moment.

Nathan Deal (R), Governor of Georgia, just vetoed a bill that would have protected the rights of pastors who refuse to perform same sex marriages, and would also have protected the property rights of institutions who hold religious beliefs. This bill was held hostage by the NFL and Disney Studios, as well as coca-Cola and others, who were calling for a boycott of the whole state if they did not get their way. How would Walt Disney see that? Or Vince Lombardi? Or George Washington? Or God?

Same sex marriage is not a civil right. The only ‘rights’ guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution were life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. A persons rights were not intended to be a blank slate of permissiveness in a society gone amuck. Gods laws and the common good of the people were foremost in the minds of the writers of the Constitution.

When the demands of one small group trump the long held beliefs of a   moral society, then we have passed the boundaries of civil rights, and have crossed into the land of divisiveness and anger. We find ourselves camped out there even now.

We have crossed the line from civil government, for and by the people, into the country of violence and reverse discrimination. The next street sign reads ‘anarchy.’

Same sex marriage became the law of the land because the people of one state caved in, rather than take a firm stand. Others quickly followed in fear. We are very, very close to losing control of our churches and our religious freedoms in this land. The first state, or the first domino, if you will, has fallen.

If we think defending the ways of the Lord is a soft and happy job, check with Jeremiah, or Isaiah, or Daniel. It was not so then, it is not so now.
