As the last man on planet earth to view the Star Wars movie I feel qualified to critique both the movie and my experience.
Time Magazine says, about ‘Star Wars- the Force Awakens..”Everything you could want in a Star Wars move, and less.”
While, about the same movie, The New York Times says. “The big news about “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is — spoiler alert — that it’s good!”.
So what are we to say about this record setting blockbuster? Was it a good story? Not really. Was it suspenseful? Not at all. Did it leave you wanting more? Not in my book. Was it exciting and full of special effects? Absolutely – to the border between overkill and boredom. Looking back now over the leftover $10 popcorn sack I left on the floor, I think the best part of the extraterrestrial experience was being in the theater with my oldest son and three grandsons, all at once. The experience of watching them won more awards that Harrison Ford did that day. All in all, it was a fun time. Really.
But I’ve seen better movies, warmer plots, thicker mysteries, and better action in my lifetime. All that is not to take away from this movie, however. I really enjoyed it, but I know a better story.
I can tell you a story about a love so deep it led to sacrificial death. Miracles therein eclipsed the best Hollywood has to offer. I know a story that is older than time, yet is as new as today’s headlines. I know a story that, above all, will leave you wanting more.
The star of stars in this movie is also the King of Kings. He does not just fly thru heaven, he created it. He not only battles galactic enemies, He does war against the Prince of Darkness, and wins.
Star Wars left me trying to figure out where reality ended and graphics and effects began. Jesus Christ made no secret about where He stood and what was real. His best line still echoes thru history and calls us to action.. ”You must be born again”.
Born, not in a Galaxy far, far away, but in your heart. How that happens, my friend is the greatest story ever told.
