Salt

Mat 5:13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men

A simple verse with such a profound meaning. Salt. A simple substance with such a profound effect. Sodium Chloride is   essential for animal life, and is one of our basic tastes. It is foundational.

salt

The use of salt goes back more than 8000 years. The Chinese used it, and the Egyptians before that. The first city in Europe, Solnitsata, which dates to 5000 B.C., was a salt mining community. If fact, its name means ‘salt works”. Our word “Salary” comes from the Latin word for salt because it often was used as payment to the Roman soldiers. Ever heard the phrase “Not worth your salt?” Now you know.

Salt is basic in agriculture, manufacturing, chemistry, and many others areas as well. Certainly, man could not survive without salt.

Then there’s sea salt. You know, that stuff they stick on tables in restaurants. It ain’t the same. Doesn’t work as well, and it lacks iodine.

Today Matthew would write, “Ye are the sea salt of the earth, but salt without flavor isn’t much good”.

QUESTION: Have we become sea salt to the world? The world is avoiding the real thing in droves. The real thing? The salt or the Spirit? Both, it seems, and life, may I assure you, is not flavored, enjoyed, or preserved without it
