Devil in the Deal

Dan and The Devil

Robert Johnson, in 1936, made a deal with the Devil whereby he exchanged his soul for musical talents, and from that action Southern, or ‘Delta,” Blues were born.

In ‘The Devil and Daniel Webster, “ by Stephen Vincent Benet, published in 1937, a similar pact was made.

On the front page of Americas newspapers today we find our representative to the world, Barak Hussein Obama, signing a similar pact with Iran on our behalf. Thanks a lot..

And in Americas churches, schools, and places of business these contracts are made every day. Oh, they not a face to face confrontations   like the aforementioned instances, but rather they are written by a forsaking of the God who created us and an allegiance with the world around us. Just a deadly; just as dangerous.

Robert Johnson, so the story goes, answered a knock on the door one night and left this world with the devil. Farmer Jabez Stone had a famous lawyer, Daniel Webster, to plead his case, and America? Well the jury is still out on her. Only time will tell how that deal works out. Not too much time, either, I suspect.

The final demonic case is about you and me and our soul. Have you forsaken the God of your childhood and walked off into the world in response to the sound of opportunity knocking?

There is a ‘good news, bad news’ ending to this short story. Good news is that you have an advocate available to you whose record before the bar far surpasses that of Mr. Webster. The bad news is that you and I, like Farmer Stone, Robert Johnson, and America, are quickly running  out of time. There is an eternal door whose knock must be answered in all our lives. Are you ready?
