Psalm 46
The 46th Psalm was possibly sung as the children of Israel crossed the Red Sea. They were in troubled times. The raging waters were before them, the enemy behind them, and so, lifting up their skirt tails, they sang to the Lord as they stepped out into the waters. We do that a lot, .. don’t we?
1 God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.
Israel was in trouble, and they sang to the Lord.
Are we not troubled, or have we forgotten the words and the songs?
I can remember the words to an old McDonalds ditty about sesame seed buns, lettuce-pickle, etc, and I still recall “ittsy, bittsy spider”, but I seldom think to bust out with a hymn or verse of scripture.
Maybe we are not troubled enough.
Maybe we have forgotten the words?
Maybe we have forgotten the Lord?
Honestly, God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.
A little boy was asked to define a lie, so, not yet aware of Hillary Clinton, and being a good Christian lad, he used some scriptures he’d heard, but got two of them confused, and it came out this way; “A lie is an abomination unto the Lord, and a very present help in times of trouble.”
However, when we find ourselves between a rock and a hard place, it is not a laughing matter, is it?
Faithfully, God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, Even though the earth be removed, And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; 3 Though its waters roar and be troubled, Though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah
“Selah” is a musical term, it means ‘pause’. Selah means ‘stop and listen’ ‘Hold that note /thought/idea’. Stop and listen to what the psalmist just said..
” Though the waters roar and the mountains shake, and the earth be removed, we will not fear, for God is our strength and our hope.”
Stop (selah) a moment and remember the Words of the Lord, and have a great day!
